Affordable Pages AI-Powered Bookstore Integration

Abelar AI partnered with Affordable Pages, a Ghana-based online bookstore, to embed AI-driven product recommendations, smart search, and checkout optimisation, making quality books more accessible across West Africa.

Product Vision

  • Deploy a personalized recommendation engine that surfaces relevant books based on browsing history, purchase patterns, and regional reading trends across Ghana and West Africa.
  • Integrate a conversational AI shopping assistant into the checkout flow to reduce cart abandonment and guide customers toward completing purchases.
  • Build a smart search layer powered by natural language processing, enabling users to search by mood, topic, or storyline rather than just title or author.
  • Develop a dynamic pricing and deal-alert system that notifies subscribers of sales and promotions tailored to their reading preferences.
  • Create an AI-powered inventory forecasting tool to help Affordable Pages stock the right titles at the right time based on demand signals.

Overview

Affordable Pages is a growing Ghanaian e-commerce platform dedicated to making quality fiction, non-fiction, and educational books accessible to readers across West Africa. With free delivery on orders over ₵1,000 and 24/7 customer support, the platform is already lowering barriers to reading, but Abelar AI saw an opportunity to make the experience smarter, faster, and more personalized.

The Challenge

Despite a well-structured catalogue spanning multiple categories and a loyal customer base, Affordable Pages faced challenges common to growing African e-commerce platforms: high cart abandonment rates, low product discoverability, and limited personalization at scale. Customers often browsed extensively without converting, and the platform lacked the intelligence to proactively surface the right book at the right moment.

What Abelar AI Built

AI Recommendation Engine

We developed and integrated a collaborative filtering recommendation model trained on anonymized browsing and purchase data. The model accounts for local reading preferences, including popular Ghanaian and African authors, to ensure recommendations feel culturally relevant, not just algorithmically generic.

Smart Checkout Assistant

A lightweight conversational AI widget was embedded into the checkout page to assist undecided shoppers. The assistant answers questions about delivery times, suggests complementary titles, and applies relevant promo codes, reducing friction at the most critical step of the purchase journey.

Natural Language Search

Using a fine-tuned NLP model, we upgraded the platform's search functionality so users can type queries like "a motivational book for entrepreneurs in Ghana" or "exciting adventure stories for teenagers" and receive highly relevant results, even without knowing exact titles or authors.

Subscriber Intelligence

Affordable Pages' newsletter and subscription system was enhanced with AI segmentation, ensuring that deal alerts and new arrivals are matched to each subscriber's demonstrated interests, improving open rates and repeat purchases.

Impact

Since deployment, Affordable Pages has seen measurable improvements in session-to-purchase conversion, average order value, and customer retention. The AI-powered search has become one of the most-used features on the platform, with users spending more time engaging with recommendations before purchasing.

Why This Matters for West Africa

Access to books and knowledge resources remains uneven across the region. By making it easier for people to find, afford, and purchase the books they actually want, this project sits at the intersection of AI and literacy, a combination Abelar AI believes is foundational to long-term economic and social development in Ghana and beyond.

What's Next

We are currently scoping Phase 2 of the engagement, which will include multilingual support for French-speaking West African markets, voice-enabled search for low-literacy users, and an AI-driven seller dashboard to help Affordable Pages' team make smarter stocking and marketing decisions.
